Experience

I am a patient educator who has had over eight year classroom experience in public, private, elementary, middle and high school. In math, I have noticed that the majority of my students struggle because they are hands-on learners. Most math textbooks explain math in a single direction that leave many students frustrated and confused. I specialize in making the often abstract mathematic concepts tangible so my students can understand them. I find using manipulatives such as algebra tiles, fraction sticks and interactive graphs make complex ideas suddenly make sense. For writing, While teaching a variety of curriculum I found that my students responded best to a program called Step-Up to Writing, which I now exclusively tutor. In this program I place all the emphasis on organizing the students' ideas BEFORE they even begin writing a sentence. This allows students to organize their writing into outlines. Once the outlines have been completed 80% of the writing is finished! Students find it easy to translate their outlines into paragraphs. Writing and Reading Comprehension are two intricately related subjects. I enjoy allowing my students to choose the texts they would like to read and then we create writing pieces about what we have read. This allows students to feel ownership of what we are working on. My passion is science. I have a single subject credential in Biological Science and through my years of experience I find that the majority of my students who struggle in the subject have difficulties reading and comprehending the text and writing their answers in an organized and coherent way. When I work with my biology students I introduce them to a variety of ways to study science textbooks and how to appropriately respond to their questions. My students find that this not only helps them in their biology class but helps prepare them for a variety of science classes to come. I look forward to meeting any new students, understanding their learning modalities and finding ways I can best meet their needs.
